<abstract>This data set is a polygon shapefile representing the coal field of the United States. Resolution of data is 1:5000000. Most of the material was collected from the 4 NCRA regional assessment files produced by the USGS - Professional Paper 1625-A,B,C,D and applied to updating John Tully's 1996 USGS OFR 96-92 “Coal Fields of the United States.” OFR 96-92 was an update of James Trumbull's "Coal Fields of the United States,Conterminous United States" (sheet 1, 1960) map. The gulf coast region was taken from AAPG Discovery series 14/Studies in Geology 62 by Warwick et al.. As the definition of economic coal changes with technology and sources of use other than mining, the classifications of economic and uneconomic coal were dropped.</abstract>
<purpose>This data set was compiled primarily for use in cartographic products. This shapefile has also been used in web applications
as well as in other miscellaneous graphic proudcts for demonstration purposes with other federal agencies and congress. The need for an updated digital version of this data incorporating the NCRA data, and removing the economic parameters were the underlying reasons for generating it. </purpose>
