<descript>
The USGS Energy Science Center assesses oil and gas resources through hundreds of geological provinces throughout the United States and the World. Within the United States, 71 provinces have been defined for onshore and State water areas. Over 200 world provinces have also been defined. Provinces are generally geologically defined, but at times may follow geographic or political boundaries. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. This dataset includes provinces from assessments as early as 1995 through 2009. As new assessments are released, this layer will be updated.
<purpose>This dataset illustrates the geologic boundaries of the US and the World to provide a general overview of locations of USGS oil and gas assessments.</purpose>

<procstep>
<procdesc>
We ran lins2cov.aml on the .lin files (from USGS DDS-35) to
create the province coverages. The lins2cov.aml takes files
from the NOGA 95 Spatial Data Disk (DDS-35), and reformats into
Arc/Info Generate format (ASCII) files. They are then
imported into ArcInfo coverages using the GENERATE command,
subsequently they are cleaned to remove any potential overlap
of polygons (using .000001 weed and fuzzy tolerances).
Region/province numbers and names are appended to the file
using lookup information acquired from tables on the NOGA 95
Tabular Information Disk (DDS-36). The individual province
coverages were merged to create one national coverage.

<idPurp>This dataset illustrates the geologic boundaries of the US and the World to provide a general overview of locations of USGS oil and gas assessments.</idPurp>
<idAbs>

</idAbs>
