Coalbed methane (CBM) is a source of natural gas that is recovered by dewatering coal beds and collecting volatile compounds, such as methane, that are desorbed from the coal. One method to beneficially use water produced from coalbed methane (CBM) extraction is subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) of croplands. This article reports on initial results from tracking water and solutes from the injected CBM-produced waters at an SDI system in Johnson County, Wyoming.

The total original coal resource in the Northern Wyoming Powder River Basin assessment area for all 24 coal beds assessed, with no restrictions applied, was calculated to be 285 billion short tons. Available coal resources, which are part of the original coal resource that is accessible for potential mine development after subtracting all restrictions, are about 263 billion short tons (92.3 percent of the original coal resource). With a discounted cash flow at 8 percent rate of return, the coal reserves estimate for the Northern Wyoming Powder River Basin assessment area is 1.5 billion short tons of coal (1 percent of the original resource total) for the seven coal beds evaluated.

Well tests in Wainwright, Alaska, confirmed the gas content of the coal reservoir within this area. If producible, the Wainwright coal bed contains sufficient gas to serve as a long-term source of energy for the community.

USGS Publication: Open-File Report 2010–1114Between 1999 and 2007, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) investigated coalbed methane (CBM) resources in the Wyoming portion of the Powder River Basin. The study also included the CBM resources in the North Dakota portion of the Williston Basin of North Dakota and the Wyoming portion of the Green River Basin of Wyoming. This report presents megascopic lithologic descriptive data collected from canister samples extracted from the 37 wells cored for this project.
Methane and other gases, while frequently produced with petroleum, also occur in association with coal. Coalbed gas accounts for about eight percent of U.S. natural gas production. U.S. estimates (Rice, 1997) indicate more than 700 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of coalbed gas in place, with over 100 TCF economically recoverable--a five-year supply at present rates of consumption.
The USGS Energy Resources Program assesses potential U.S. coalbed gas resources including controls on the occurrence and recoverability, (including produced water) and geologic, geochemical, engineering, and technological factors.
The USGS Energy Resources Team examines environmental considerations with coalbed natural gas development (CBNG) nationwide. A major portion of this is on water co-produced with CBNG, which is provided in the Energy Program’s "Produced Waters" topic.
Several Energy Resources Program coalbed methane assessments for the United States are currently available.
