USGS Publication: Open-File Report 2012–1194Detailed and reconnaissance field mapping and the results of geochemical and mineralogical analyses of outcrop samples indicate that the Devonian shales of the Broadtop Synclinorium from central Virginia to southern Pennsylvania have an organic content sufficiently high and a thermal maturity sufficiently moderate to be considered for a shale gas play.

This paper is the third in a series of different methodological tests aimed at enhancement in the assessment of unconventional resources in the form of more effective use of implicit and explicit information contained in the data, more accurate evaluation of resources, and more informative display of results. Reprocessing of estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) data at the Woodford gas shale in Oklahoma shows that subdivision of the play into areas as homogeneous as possible can produce comparable results with those obtained employing several variables correlated to local productivity.

Outside Publication: AAPG Search and DiscoveryMany oil and gas reservoirs in Tertiary strata of southern Louisiana are located close to the interface between a sand-rich, normally pressured sequence and an underlying sand-poor, overpressured sequence. This association, recognized for many years by Gulf Coast explorationists, is revisited here because of its relevance to an assessment of undiscovered oil and gas potential in the Gulf Coast of Louisiana.

USGS Publication: Open-File Report 2012–1146The purpose of this report is to explain the development of an analytic probabilistic method and spreadsheet software system called Analytic Cell-Based Continuous Energy Spreadsheet System (ACCESS). The ACCESS spreadsheet can be used to calculate estimates of the undeveloped oil, gas, and NGL (natural gas liquids) resources in a continuous-type assessment unit.

USGS Publication: Open-File Report 2012-1046A one-dimensional petroleum system modeling study of Paleogene source rocks in Louisiana was undertaken in order to characterize their thermal history and to establish the timing and extent of petroleum generation. The focus of the modeling study was the Paleocene and Eocene Wilcox Formation, which contains the youngest source rock interval in the Gulf Coast Province.

Using a geology-based assessment method, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated a mean undiscovered natural gas resource of 3.9 trillion cubic feet and a mean undiscovered natural gas liquids resource of 135 million barrels in continuous accumulations within five East Coast Mesozoic basins.
The USGS Energy Resources Program provides periodic assessments of the oil and natural gas endowment of the United States. New, prioritized, assessment results, as part of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) and the current National Assessment are shown above. Additional EPCA and priority basin assessment results will be posted as they become available.
