USGS Publication: Open-File Report 2011–1298
The USGS recently assessed the potential for natural gas resources in the Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale of the Appalachian Basin Province. This preliminary report provides some additional geologic information used in the Marcellus Shale assessment.

USGS Publication: Scientific Investigations Report 2011–5163A new U.S. Geological Survey method was developed to assess the reserve-growth potential of technically recoverable crude oil and natural gas to be added to reserves under proven technology currently in practice within the trend or play, or which reasonably can be extrapolated from geologically similar trends or plays. This method currently is in use to assess potential additions to reserves in discovered fields of the United States.

USGS paper published in the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, Boletín Geológico y Minero. New experimental methodology for assessing continuous gas resources is illustrated by evaluating a gas play in the Woodford Shale in the Arkoma Basin of Oklahoma.

Departures of resistivity logs from a normal compaction gradient indicate that overpressure previously extended north of the present-day overpressured zone. These indicators of paleopressure, which are strongest in the deep basin, are mapped to the Kansas-Oklahoma border in shales of Desmoinesian age.

In 2010 the USGS assessed undiscovered oil and gas resources for the Anadarko Basin Province of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. The assessment included three continuous (unconventional) assessment units (AU). Mean undiscovered resources for the Devonian Woodford Shale Gas AU are about 16 trillion cubic feet of gas (TCFG) and 192 million barrels of natural gas liquids (MMBNGL); Woodford Shale Oil AU are 393 million barrels of oil (MMBO), 2 TCFG, and 59 MMBNGL; and Pennsylvanian Thirteen Finger Limestone–Atoka Shale Gas AU are 6.8 TCFG and 82 MMBNGL.

In 2011, the USGS completed an assessment of the undiscovered oil and gas potential of the Devonian Marcellus Shale within the Appalachian Basin Province of the eastern United States. The Marcellus Shale contains about 84 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered, technically recoverable natural gas and 3.4 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable natural gas liquids according to the new assessment.

USGS Publication: Open-File Report 2011–1167The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has developed a revised quantitative methodology for assessing resources in continuous (unconventional) petroleum deposits. Continuous petroleum resources include shale gas, coalbed gas, and other oil and gas deposits in low-permeability (“tight”) reservoirs.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) compiled a geographic information system (GIS) of Wyoming statewide historical oil and gas drilling activity for the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). This product complements the 2009 USGS publication on oil and gas development in southwestern Wyoming by approximating, based on database attributes, the time frame of drilling activity for each well (start and stop dates).

USGS Publication: Open-File Report 2011–1175Gas, oil, and water production data were compiled from selected wells in two tight gas reservoirs—the Codell-Niobrara interval, comprised of the Codell Sandstone Member of the Carlile Shale and the Niobrara Formation; and the Dakota J interval, comprised mostly of the Muddy (J) Sandstone of the Dakota Group; both intervals are of Cretaceous age—in the Wattenberg field in the Denver Basin of Colorado.
The USGS Energy Resources Program provides periodic assessments of the oil and natural gas endowment of the United States. New, prioritized, assessment results, as part of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) and the current National Assessment are shown above. Additional EPCA and priority basin assessment results will be posted as they become available.
