Petroleum Systems and Assessment of Undiscovered Oil and Gas in the Anadarko Basin Province, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas—USGS Province 58

USGS Publication: Digital Data Series 69-EE
This publication provides research results and related data in support of the U.S. Geological Survey assessment of the undiscovered oil and gas resource potential of the Anadarko Basin Province of western Oklahoma and Kansas, northern Texas, and southeastern Colorado. This province area includes the Las Animas arch of southeastern Colorado, part of the Palo Duro Basin of Texas, and the Anadarko Basin.

Thermal maturity of Tasmanites microfossils from confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy

Outside Publication: Fuel
We report here, for the first time, spectral properties of Tasmanites microfossils determined by confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy (CLSM, using Ar 458 nm excitation). The Tasmanites occur in a well-characterized natural maturation sequence (Ro 0.48–0.74%) of Devonian shale (n = 3 samples) from the Appalachian Basin...

Map of assessed coalbed-gas resources in the United States, 2014

USGS Publication: Digital Data Series 69-II
This report presents a digital map of coalbed-gas resource assessments in the United States as part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Assessment of Oil and Gas Project. Using a geology-based assessment methodology, the USGS quantitatively estimated potential volumes of undiscovered, technically recoverable natural gas resources within coalbed-gas assessment units (AUs).

Modeling uncertainty in coal resource assessments, with an application to a central area of the Gillette coal field, Wyoming

USGS Publication: SIR 2014-5196
Standards for the public disclosure of mineral resources and reserves do not require the use of any specific methodology when it comes to estimating the reliability of the resources. Unbeknownst to most intended recipients of resource appraisals, such freedom commonly results in subjective opinions or estimations based on suboptimal approaches, such as use of distance...

Collaborative studies for mercury characterization in coal and coal combustion products, Republic of South Africa

USGS Publication: Open-File Report 2014-1153
Mercury (Hg) analyses were obtained in USGS laboratories for 42 new samples of feed coal provided by Eskom, representing all 13 coal-fired power stations operated by Eskom in South Africa. This sampling includes results for three older power stations—Camden, Grootvlei, and Komati—returned to service starting in the late 2000s...

Geological controls on the occurrence of gas hydrate from core, downhole log, and seismic data in the Shenhu area, South China Sea

Outside Publication: Marine Geology

Multi-channel seismic reflection data, well logs, and recovered sediment cores have been used in this study to characterize the geologic controls on the occurrence of gas hydrate in the Shenhu area of the South China Sea. The concept of the “gas hydrate petroleum system” has allowed for the systematic analysis of the impact of gas source, geologic controls...
