The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently completed a geology-based assessment of conventional and continuous oil and gas resources of the Devonian Three Forks Formation and Devonian and Mississippian Bakken Formation in the Williston Basin Province of North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota. Since the 2008 USGS assessment of the Bakken Formation (Pollastro and others, 2008), more than 4,000 additional wells have been drilled, providing significant geologic data about the Bakken and Three Forks Formations.
